The OMJ Foundation, led by its Chief Executive Officer, Osei Mensah Joseph, has launched an initiative to support commercial motorcycle riders in Akuapem South, Ghana. On September 26, 2026, the foundation provided free fuel to over 600 riders at 34 stations across 29 towns and communities. The gesture aims to appreciate the critical role okada riders play in the municipality's transportation system and local economy. According to Mr. Mensah Joseph, about 70 percent of commuters in Akuapem South rely on okada services daily.
The free fuel initiative, dubbed “OMJ Free Fuel for Okada Riders – Akuapem South,” took place at the TotalEnergies Filling Station in Aburi. Each rider received fuel sufficient to cover a day's work. Mr. Mensah Joseph emphasized that the initiative is part of his personal charitable project and commitment to giving back to the people of Akuapem South. He acknowledged the riders' efforts in moving the local economy and promised to support their work, making it convenient, safe, and productive.
However, Mr. Mensah Joseph also raised concerns about the licensing and registration status of the riders. Research by his team revealed that 85 percent of the riders do not have riding licenses, while 90 percent are yet to register their vehicles. He pledged to support rider safety through the provision of reflective riding gear to improve visibility, particularly at night and in foggy seasons. This move aims to enhance road safety and encourage compliance with relevant regulations.
The programme brought together various stakeholders, including officials from the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the National Road Safety Commission, Star Assurance, Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and the Commercial Riders Union of Ghana (CRUG). These stakeholders addressed the riders on road safety, licensing, motorcycle registration, insurance, health insurance, fire safety, and responsible riding. NHIS officials also registered new members and renewed expired memberships free of charge.
The initiative was part of Mr. Mensah Joseph's commitment to understanding and addressing challenges confronting commercial motorcycle riders. He recognized their contribution to the movement of people, goods, and services and the local economy. Beneficiaries from across the municipality expressed appreciation for the charitable intervention. The programme was anchored on the principle: “Giving Back, Giving Hope, Inspiring Generations,” and was part of observing the International Day of Charity on September 5.
