The Director General of Nigeria's National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, has announced plans to improve the pay of the Super Falcons, the country's national women's football team. Olopade emphasized that the infrastructure drive goes beyond major stadiums to include neighborhood facilities and support for state governments building and revamping sports venues across the country. This initiative aims to create opportunities for communities to access these facilities. By doing so, the government hopes to promote sports development at the grassroots level.
The National Sports Commission is also supporting the growth of female leadership in sports, as exemplified by the Nigeria Netball Federation. The federation has a female president, and nine of its 13 board members are women. Olopade pointed to this as an example of progress in promoting women's participation in sports.
The Nigeria Netball Federation is currently making its debut at the Africa Netball Cup and the 2027 Netball World Cup qualifiers in Nairobi, Kenya. Olopade assured the team of the government's support, stating that they will receive all the necessary backing to succeed.
In addition to the Super Falcons and the netball team, Olopade also expressed support for D'Tigress, Nigeria's women's basketball team. Following their recent success on the continent, the government has reassured them of its backing. President Bola Tinubu has fulfilled the nation's promise to pay each player $100,000.
Olopade's approach to sports development focuses on progress rather than past setbacks. He described himself as a "pathological optimist" who refuses to dwell on past failures. Instead, he aims to reset Nigerian sports around access, athlete development, infrastructure, and welfare.
The government's sports development plans aim to benefit not only elite athletes but also communities and young Nigerians. By promoting access to sports facilities and supporting women in sports, the government hopes to create a more inclusive and sustainable sports ecosystem.
