Dr. Ola Brown, a medical doctor and finance expert, has been recognized as a finalist for the 2026 Africa Women Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum (AWIEF) Impact for Good Award. As the General Partner at HealthCap Africa, Brown leads a specialist investment fund that supports early-stage healthcare and financial technology companies across Africa. Her career spans medicine, finance, investment, and healthcare innovation, showcasing her diverse expertise.
Brown's nomination highlights her significant contributions to the healthcare sector in Africa. With a Master's degree in Finance and over 10 years of investment experience, she has established herself as a prominent figure in the industry. She chairs the Credit Committee of a Nigerian financial institution and serves on the executive committee of Women in Finance Nigeria, further solidifying her position as a leader in finance.
The AWIEF Impact for Good Award recognizes women whose work has produced measurable social and economic impact across Africa. Brown is the only Nigerian among the three finalists for the award, competing alongside Nada Ghammem of Tunisia and Echo Nomsa VanderWal of Eswatini. The winner will be announced at the AWIEF Awards Gala in Cape Town on November 11, 2026.
Brown's recognition comes amid growing concerns over Africa's healthcare funding gap and the continent's difficult health outcomes. Nigeria accounted for an estimated 28.7 per cent of all maternal deaths worldwide in 2023, representing about 75,000 deaths. The country's under-five mortality rate was estimated at about 116 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2024, according to UNICEF.
The healthcare sector in Africa continues to face significant funding challenges, with healthcare businesses attracting relatively little private capital compared to the scale of the challenges facing the sector. In 2024, healthcare companies across Africa secured only 27 venture capital deals worth US$43 million, representing the sector's lowest level of venture funding since 2018.
HealthCap Africa's investment strategy seeks to address part of this gap by providing early-stage equity to healthcare and fintech companies. The fund's portfolio companies currently operate in 10 African countries, supporting about 1,000 jobs and providing services to roughly two million patients. Brown has emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between specialist investment funds, government, and philanthropic organizations to address the healthcare funding gap.
The AWIEF Awards, launched in 2017, aim to recognize women entrepreneurs and business leaders contributing to Africa's economic growth and social development. Brown's nomination is a testament to her dedication to improving healthcare outcomes in Africa through innovative investment strategies. Her work at HealthCap Africa has the potential to make a significant impact in addressing the continent's healthcare challenges.
