The Commissioner for Art, Culture and Creative Economy in Edo State, Hon Chris Okaeben, has called on security agencies to take decisive action against illegal activities at the Ring road in Benin City. Okaeben highlighted the prevalence of indiscriminate activities near the Palace of the Oba of Benin, including unauthorized trading and passenger drop-offs. The Commissioner emphasized that Nigeria must not reach a point where security agencies are dictated to or taught how to perform their duties. Okaeben urged the press to join hands with relevant security agencies to checkmate these activities, particularly around the King’s Square in Ring road.
Okaeben specifically mentioned that activities such as trading, picking, and dropping off passengers indiscriminately near the King’s Square, especially close to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) branch, are unacceptable. He suggested that some individuals may be collecting money from those engaging in these activities, allowing them to operate with impunity.
The Commissioner warned that if security agencies fail to address these issues, he may take up the challenge of clearing the Ring road and restoring order, especially with the state preparing to celebrate the 10th coronation anniversary of the Oba of Benin. He emphasized the importance of reviving values and ensuring a positive image for the state during this celebration, which will attract visitors from far and near.
