Lagos State chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, has called on party leaders and members to strengthen the party's structures and grassroots engagement ahead of the 2027 general elections. In his Independence Day message, Ojelabi linked Nigeria's democratic experience to the need for greater political participation and respect for the electoral process. He emphasized that the 2027 elections would provide Nigerians with another opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to choose their leaders.
Ojelabi urged political parties to engage citizens through persuasion, organisation, and mobilisation. According to him, the APC in Lagos must strengthen its structures, deepen engagement with the electorate, and work collectively for the success of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other APC candidates in the state. He stressed that Lagos must be ready to organise, engage, communicate, mobilise, and participate in the electoral process.
The APC chairman also called on party members to uphold democratic values during the political season. He said campaigns should be based on facts and ideas, while political competition should remain peaceful and issues-based. Ojelabi urged party members to campaign with facts and ideas, engage with confidence and respect, defend their records, and present their vision for the future.
Ojelabi paid tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola and other Nigerians who participated in the struggle for democratic rule. He noted that the significance of June 12, 1993, should continue to remind citizens of the importance of respecting the people's mandate. The democratic journey from Nigeria's independence to the June 12 election and subsequent developments showed that citizens' right to determine their collective future should not be taken for granted.
The APC chairman called on party members to take mobilisation to the grassroots, noting that every polling unit, ward, and community would be important in the 2027 elections. He urged members to put the party's interests and Lagos' progress above personal differences, while calling for greater unity and disciplined mobilisation across the state.
Ojelabi encouraged citizens to participate actively in the democratic process. He called on APC leaders, stakeholders, and members in Lagos to work together ahead of 2027. The chairman's call is part of efforts to ensure the party's success in the state and promote democratic values.
The 2027 general elections are expected to be a significant event in Nigeria's democratic journey. Ojelabi's call to action is a reminder of the importance of strengthening party structures and engaging with the electorate. The APC in Lagos will need to work collectively to achieve success in the state.
