A group of young Nigerians, GenZ in Politics, has taken its voter education and grassroots engagement campaign to Lusada Market in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State. The initiative is part of the group’s Market-to-Market Engagement Campaign aimed at taking political awareness and voter education to markets and communities across the state. This campaign is crucial as political activities and preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.
The exercise, which commenced on Wednesday, was led by Sunmola Olashile, Convener of GenZ in Politics and Consultant to the Ogun State Governor. During the engagement, the group canvassed support for Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, who is seeking the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress. They also sought support for other APC candidates, including Jimoh Ojugbele and High Chief Olanrewaju Bashorun.
A major focus of the campaign was voter education, as traders were taken through the process of correctly thumbprinting their ballot papers and avoiding mistakes that could render their votes invalid. The practical demonstration attracted the attention of market women, men, and other traders. The organisers stressed the need for voters to understand the voting process before going to the polls.
Speaking on the initiative, Olashile said young people had a responsibility to participate in the political process and contribute to conversations about the future of the country. The campaign would go beyond political mobilisation by creating opportunities for citizens, particularly young people and market communities, to become more informed about the electoral process.
The Lusada Market engagement marks the beginning of the planned Market-to-Market Campaign across Ogun State, with similar engagements expected to be held in other markets and communities ahead of the 2027 general elections. Subsequent engagements would focus on political awareness, voter education, and grassroots interaction.
Recall that Yayi picked up the N50 million All Progressives Congress governorship nomination forms for the 2027 Ogun State election in April. This signals his entry into the race for the state’s top seat. The group’s efforts aim to ensure that eligible voters are well-informed and prepared for the upcoming elections.
The voter education campaign by GenZ in Politics highlights the importance of engaging young people and market communities in the electoral process. By taking their campaign to markets, the group is reaching out to a significant segment of the population that may not typically be involved in political discussions.
