Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has given assurance that a new Awujale will emerge in Ijebuland before May 29. This was disclosed by his Media Adviser, Kayode Akinmade, in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Wednesday. The governor made the promise at a stakeholders' meeting for Ogun East Senatorial District in Ijebu Ode, attended by representatives of different interest groups. The meeting aimed to strengthen engagement with grassroots stakeholders, address community concerns, and highlight the governor's administration achievements.
The governor emphasized that his administration is committed to ensuring a peaceful and acceptable process for selecting the new traditional ruler. He urged the people to remain calm and patient while the necessary steps are being completed. Abiodun highlighted the importance of the Awujale institution to the cultural heritage, identity, and unity of Ijebuland. His administration is giving the succession process the attention it deserves to ensure the new Awujale enjoys the acceptance and support of the people.
The Awujale stool became vacant in July 2025 following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona at the age of 91. The late monarch reigned for 65 years. Since then, 95 royals have been jostling for the Awujale stool, creating a succession battle. Governor Abiodun's assurance provides relief to the people of Ijebuland, who have been eagerly waiting for a new king.
On economic development, Abiodun identified oil exploration around Eba Island and the proposed Gateway Deep-Sea Port in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area as major projects that could boost the state's economy. These projects are expected to create jobs and make Ogun State a major centre for maritime trade, manufacturing, and logistics.
The governor also mentioned the proposed Blue Marine Special Economic Zone, which would attract investment and create jobs. He reaffirmed his administration's commitment to infrastructure development and attracting investors. Abiodun thanked President Bola Tinubu for supporting key projects and initiatives in the state.
Abiodun urged residents and stakeholders to continue working together to promote peace and development. The governor's administration has been working on various projects, and he highlighted some of the achievements over the past seven years. The stakeholders' meeting provided a platform for the governor to engage with the people and address their concerns.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the governor's assurance has brought hope to the people of Ijebuland. The emergence of a new Awujale is expected to bring stability and unity to the kingdom. With the governor's commitment to a peaceful and acceptable process, the people of Ijebuland are optimistic about the future.
