The Ogun State Police Command has assured residents of a peaceful, safe, and secure environment before, during, and after the 2027 general elections. Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, made this commitment in Abeokuta on Tuesday, during a two-day capacity-building workshop. The workshop, themed "Elections, Security, the Law, Stakeholders and the Media," was organised in collaboration with the Development Communication Research Centre to prepare key actors for upcoming electoral duties.
CP Ojajuni emphasised that while security agencies have a statutory duty to maintain public order, peaceful elections depend on the active cooperation of all stakeholders. He called on political parties, candidates, and supporters to operate within the law and avoid actions that could trigger violence. The police chief also urged electoral officials to execute their duties professionally and impartially.
Ojajuni tasked media practitioners with delivering accurate, balanced, and responsible coverage, warning against inflammatory reports. He also urged election observers and monitors to strictly adhere to their specified mandates. According to him, stakeholders must respect the law to ensure a peaceful electoral process.
Prof. Fassy Yusuf delivered the keynote address, highlighting the importance of police neutrality, professional conduct, and institutional accountability in election security. He reminded security personnel that they are not participants in political contests and must not act or appear to act in a manner that determines electoral outcomes.
Prof. Yusuf discussed the key provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, describing it as a landmark piece of legislation designed to safeguard and fortify Nigeria's democratic process. The Act aims to ensure the integrity of elections and prevent violence.
