Human rights lawyer Pelumi Olajengbesi has disclosed that Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun agreed to stand as a guarantor for activist Sunday Igboho's conduct, allowing him to return to Nigeria for his mother's burial. Olajengbesi made this revelation in a Facebook post after visiting Igboho, whom he described as his elder brother and former client. The two discussed politics, leadership, and Igboho's experiences over the years.
According to Olajengbesi, Igboho called him in 2023 after his mother's death, insisting that he had to return home to pay his last respects. Olajengbesi subsequently appealed to Abiodun for assistance. The governor asked whether the then National Security Adviser had been approached and expressed the view that President Bola Tinubu would support anyone whose activities stay within the law.
Olajengbesi connected Igboho with Abiodun and three other governors, who considered the appeal. Abiodun agreed to guarantee Igboho's conduct during a seven-day grace period granted for the burial. Igboho returned, performed the rites, and left the country immediately afterwards. Olajengbesi added that the matter was later settled through engagements involving several prominent Nigerians, within the law.
Igboho left Nigeria for the Benin Republic in 2021. He had been a prominent voice in the defence of Yoruba interests, and his experiences have been a subject of discussion. Olajengbesi described Igboho as one of the most courageous individuals he has ever encountered. The lawyer also recalled Igboho's appreciation for his role in standing by him during his travails.
In February 2024, Olajengbesi publicly thanked Abiodun for his role in Igboho's peaceful return. During their conversation, Igboho recalled Olajengbesi's efforts in standing by him during his detention, often praising him to high heavens. Olajengbesi noted that representing Igboho was an inspiring experience, even when he was not paid a kobo.
Olajengbesi's statement added that Igboho's place in contemporary Yoruba history and conversations surrounding the identity, security, and aspirations of the Yoruba people cannot be ignored. The lawyer expressed pleasure in reconnecting with Igboho, thanking him for the warm reception and meaningful conversations.
