Medical students from Obafemi Awolowo University, through their IFUMSA Health Awareness Club, recently provided free medical and surgical services to over 200 residents of Moro Community in Osun State. This annual outreach, organized by the Obafemi Awolowo University Medical Students' Association, aimed to improve access to basic healthcare for residents in underserved communities. The event was supported by medical professionals, including surgeons and nurses from the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex.
The outreach program, which was part of the students' efforts to give back to society, offered various healthcare services, including blood pressure and blood sugar checks, hepatitis B and HIV screening, urinalysis, and body mass index assessment. Dental consultations and provision of medications were also provided. A surgical team performed free day-case procedures, such as lipoma excision, hernia repair, hydrocelectomy, and breast lump excision. The services were provided by about 90 medical, dental, and pharmacy students, along with two surgeons and three perioperative nurses.
According to Oladipupo Ayomipo, Chairperson of the Health Awareness Club and a final-year medical student, the outreach was designed to address the challenge of accessing basic healthcare services due to high costs. Many Nigerians pay out-of-pocket for healthcare, making community-based interventions crucial in reaching those who might otherwise struggle to access medical services. Ayomipo stated that the club continually makes efforts to sustain the project and make an impact on people's lives.
Aboderin Oluwatobiloba, Local Organising Committee Chairperson, emphasized that the program aimed to promote equal access to healthcare, regardless of residents' economic circumstances. The committee believes that basic healthcare services should be accessible to all, irrespective of their socioeconomic status. This initiative is part of the club's ongoing efforts to provide healthcare services to underserved communities.
The Moro Community outreach is not an isolated event, as the club had previously conducted a similar exercise in Ede, Osun State, in 2025. During that event, residents received free medical consultations, medications, dental and eye care services, and health education. Beneficiaries of the recent outreach expressed appreciation to the students and health professionals for bringing medical services closer to their community.
