The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) are working together to transform the country's corps registration system. The partnership aims to enable prospective corps members to complete their enrolment from anywhere in the world, using their personal devices. This move seeks to eliminate the registration bottlenecks that have subjected thousands of Nigerian graduates to long queues at designated cybercafés.
The proposed partnership will integrate NIMC's biometric and national identity database into NYSC's online enrolment platform. This will provide a more accessible and reliable means of verifying the identities of prospective corps members. The initiative emerged during a meeting between NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, and NIMC Director-General, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, at the NIMC headquarters in Abuja.
Brigadier General Nafiu identified biometric capturing as the major technical challenge requiring NIMC's intervention. He expressed confidence that collaboration with NIMC would provide access to the necessary biometric information and strengthen the authentication process required to make remote registration reliable. The NYSC Boss commended NIMC for its efforts to ensure that Nigerians have verifiable identities.
The partnership will make the next NYSC online registration exercise more seamless, allowing prospective corps members to complete their enrolment from their homes. Beyond registration, the integration of reliable identity data will also improve planning and support national development. Engr. Coker-Odusote pledged NIMC's support for the initiative, assuring NYSC that it would work towards creating a secure and convenient digital registration environment.
NIMC will provide a digital identity platform that can facilitate access to several services, including registration for WAEC, JAMB, NECO, NYSC, and international travel. NIN holders who download the NINAuth application will be able to complete registration processes from the comfort of their homes. This collaboration will help expand access to digital services while ensuring that eligible Nigerian youths can complete registration processes in a more conducive technological environment.
The proposed collaboration marks an important step towards integrating national identity infrastructure into public service delivery. If successfully implemented, the arrangement could reduce the cost, travel requirements, congestion, and administrative delays associated with NYSC registration. However, the agencies are yet to announce a specific rollout date or provide detailed implementation guidelines for the proposed arrangement.
The development was contained in a statement issued by Caroline Embu, Director of Information and Public Relations, NYSC. The partnership between NYSC and NIMC is a significant move towards modernizing the country's corps registration system, making it more efficient, accessible, and convenient for prospective corps members.
