The National Youth Service (NYS) in Kenya has been hailed for translating youth training into practical work in communities. Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku, representing President William Ruto, noted that NYS has demonstrated the value of national service through programs that deploy young people to address practical challenges in communities across the country. This was during the passing-out parade of 15,363 recruits from the 01/2026 cohort at the NYS Paramilitary Academy in Gilgil.

NYS personnel have made significant contributions to environmental conservation, planting more than 71.8 million trees since 2022. Through initiatives like Climate WorX, they have also been involved in roadworks, river restoration, and other environmental interventions. The Service has further been supporting communities affected by disasters, such as in Chesongoch, Elgeyo Marakwet County, where NYS personnel are helping rebuild 56 homes destroyed by landslides.

The NYS has also created employment opportunities for its alumni, with 12,760 former members transitioning into vetted employment opportunities since 2024. Of these, 5,720 have secured placements in countries like the United Kingdom, Israel, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Australia through the government's Kazi Majuu initiative. This complements the Government's Labour Mobility Programme, which facilitates access to overseas employment opportunities for suitably skilled Kenyans.

In addition to environmental conservation and employment programs, NYS is involved in agricultural initiatives. The Service has partnered with the National Irrigation Authority (NIA) to bring 3,000 acres under cultivation in the Tana Basin. NYS is also involved in potato seed multiplication in Turbo and plans to establish at least 100 acres for production of clean, disease-free potato seed.

The NYS has a diverse cohort of recruits, with 11,527 male recruits, 3,835 female recruits, and 15 recruits living with disabilities graduating from the 01/2026 cohort. The recruits underwent six months of intensive training at the NYS Paramilitary Academy in Gilgil. Cabinet Secretary Ruku commended NYS for providing an environment where young people acquire discipline and patriotism while developing practical skills.

Ruku emphasized that NYS demonstrates the role young people can play in addressing national challenges when equipped with discipline and practical skills. The Service's initiatives showcase the potential of youth in national development. The government's commitment to NYS is evident, with a recent approval of Ksh6.4 billion to expand NYS capacity.

As NYS continues to contribute to national development, its impact is being felt across various sectors. With its focus on environmental conservation, infrastructure development, disaster response, and employment programs, NYS is playing a vital role in shaping the future of Kenya's youth and the nation as a whole. The Service's achievements and plans demonstrate its potential to drive positive change in the country.
