Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has announced the appointment of key officials for the People’s Party of Kenya. The new officials will oversee crucial roles as the party develops its leadership structure. Nyoro made the announcement after a meeting with party leaders to discuss pressing issues affecting the country. The party aims to work with other opposition parties to offer credible policy alternatives for the country's economic revival.
Benny Hinn Walubengo, a 24-year-old from Nairobi County, has been named secretary general of the People’s Party. Riziki Makokha from Busia County has been appointed deputy party leader, while Samora K'alosi from Homa Bay County will serve as chairperson. Mwanamisi Swaleh from Kwale County has been appointed vice chairperson, and John Kihiu from Kiambu County will serve as deputy secretary general in charge of administration affairs.
The newly appointed officials also include Mahad Abdi from Mandera County as treasurer and Jane Sibia from Kisii County as organising secretary. Nyoro described Walubengo as intelligent and articulate. The appointments mark another step in the development of the party since Nyoro took over its leadership and moved it into the opposition in August.
Nyoro announced on August 17 that he had left the United Democratic Alliance and joined the People's Party of Kenya. He stated that he had consulted with several opposition leaders, including former Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya and People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua. The party will welcome politicians seeking to contest in the 2027 General Election and will invite aspirants from across the opposition to its tours and activities.
A day after announcing his new political direction, Nyoro began a meet-the-people tour in Murang’a. He sought to build support for the party and announced his presidential ambition. The party has since expanded its activities beyond Murang’a as Nyoro embarked on tours and recruitment drives in different parts of the country.
By September 7, more than 300 political aspirants had joined the party within its first month. The new members include sitting and former members of county assemblies, MPs, senators, and gubernatorial aspirants. Nyoro has maintained that the growth of the party is intended to expand the opposition rather than compete against other opposition formations.
Nyoro has also stated that the opposition should eventually agree on a single presidential candidate and running mate for the 2027 election. Despite his own presidential ambitions, he emphasized the importance of a united front within the opposition. The party aims to work solidly with all parties within the opposition to offer credible policy alternatives for the country's economic revival.
