NVIDIA, an American multinational technology company, recently hosted the NVIDIA AI Ecosystem Reception in Cairo, in partnership with RiseUp. The event brought together technology companies, startups, developers, investors, and academia to discuss the development of Egypt's artificial intelligence ecosystem and opportunities to deploy AI across various sectors. This gathering highlights the growing interest in AI in Egypt and the potential for collaboration and innovation in the field.
Egypt has a significant presence in NVIDIA's global Inception programme, with over 200 Egyptian startups enrolled. Additionally, NVIDIA's developer community in Egypt exceeds 46,000, indicating a strong foundation for AI development in the country. The event also showcased an upcoming strategic partnership between NVIDIA and the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA), aimed at supporting Egyptian startups and technology talent and developing local AI applications.
Paolo Guglielmini, Vice President of NVIDIA for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), emphasized Egypt's potential to expand its AI ecosystem. He cited the country's large engineering and talent base, with around 40,000 STEM graduates entering the workforce each year, as a key factor. Guglielmini also identified six layers needed to build a sustainable AI economy: talent, energy, infrastructure, chips, models, and applications.
The event featured AI applications developed by Egyptian startups, including AvidBeam, Proteinea, CyberFuse, and Marses Robotics. These startups are working on various AI-powered solutions, such as video analytics, biological AI applications, AI-enabled cybersecurity, and autonomous systems and robotics. This showcase demonstrates the innovative and diverse applications of AI in Egypt.
Ahmed El-Zaher, CEO of ITIDA, highlighted Egypt's strengths in human capital and startup ecosystem. He noted that local companies have developed AI applications despite constraints related to access to high-performance computing resources. El-Zaher also expressed ITIDA's readiness to collaborate with NVIDIA to support the wider technology ecosystem and strengthen the capabilities of Egyptian startups and talent.
Other speakers at the event, including Layla Hassan, Managing Partner at Algebra Ventures, and Mohamed Elkerdawy, Chief AI Officer at Proteinea, shared their insights on AI and its applications. They emphasized the importance of domain expertise, proprietary data, and network effects in building defensible businesses, as well as the potential for AI-powered products to address real-world challenges.
The event also included a presentation by Ahmed Mostafa, NVIDIA's Regional AI Adoption Lead for the Middle East and Africa, on how developers can use NVIDIA software tools to accelerate AI development. The gathering concluded with a discussion on practical applications of AI, highlighting the potential for AI to drive innovation and growth in various sectors in Egypt.
