The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) has announced that prospective students seeking financial assistance for the 2027 academic year must submit their applications by October 31, 2026. This was stated by Nsfas acting board chairperson, advocate Richardt Tlou Ramashia, during the launch of the 2027 application cycle in Johannesburg. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the deadline, as it will not be extended.

Ramashia urged applicants to apply early and submit the correct documentation to avoid delays. The application system is now open, and Nsfas aims to conclude funding decisions by November 30, 2026, based on eligibility criteria. This will enable the scheme to process applications, audit its decisions, and resolve appeals before the academic year begins. A rigid timetable has been put in place to ensure that only eligible students are approved and that no qualifying applicant is denied assistance due to administrative errors.

From December 1 to 9, 2026, Nsfas will audit its funding decisions to ensure that only eligible students are approved. During this period, the scheme will verify the financial information of applicants and their parents or guardians. Students who disagree with their funding decisions will be allowed to submit appeals between December 10 and 24, 2026. This provides an opportunity for applicants to contest any decisions that they believe are incorrect or unfair.

Nsfas plans to publish the outcomes of all appeals by January 9, 2027, and provide institutions with a list of funded students by January 11, 2027. Ramashia expressed confidence that the scheme is ready to receive, process, and adjudicate the applications expected during the cycle. He noted that Nsfas had conducted extensive checks to prevent technical problems from excluding applicants.

A major feature of the new application cycle is the enhanced Nsfas mobile application platform. This platform allows students to create profiles, apply for funding, upload supporting documents, and receive confirmation on their mobile devices. Applicants must ensure that all supporting documents are complete and readable, as incomplete or illegible documents are among the main causes of processing delays.

To apply for Nsfas funding, applicants must submit a completed and signed consent form, which allows the scheme to verify the financial information of their parents or guardians. Failure to submit this form could result in an application being rejected. Applicants must also press the final "submit" button and confirm that they have received a unique reference number, which can be used to track the application.

The Nsfas application process can be accessed through the scheme's website, www.nsfas.org.za. Applicants can also use their cellphones to apply for funding through the mobile application platform. With the deadline for applications approaching, prospective students are encouraged to apply early and ensure that they have all the necessary documentation to avoid delays.
