The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Capital Territory Command, has apprehended three individuals in connection with the sophisticated vandalism of a critical Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited petroleum pipeline in Dafa, located within the Kwali Area Council of Abuja. The successful operation was the culmination of days of intensive, intelligence-led surveillance executed by the Command’s tactical team.
The targeted pipeline serves as a vital national asset, supplying crude oil and refined petroleum products to the Kaduna Refinery and various strategic NNPC depots across the country. According to the NSCDC FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, the criminal syndicate had already cut through portions of the high-pressure pipeline before security operatives arrived. The NSCDC received credible actionable intelligence regarding vandalism activities along the pipeline.
The initial intervention was bolstered by local collaborations with the vigilante group, who are actively collaborating with the NSCDC Kwali divisional office. The operatives intensified surveillance, monitoring, and patrol of the location. However, upon sighting the NSCDC men, the suspected vandals fled from the scene of the crime and abandoned the already severed petroleum pipelines.
Rather than abandoning their illicit haul permanently, the suspects returned to the remote location days later under the cover of darkness, attempting to retrieve the heavy iron sections. This move proved to be their undoing. The monitoring activities paid off when the suspects allegedly returned to the area and attempted to load the abandoned iron pipes into a truck.
NSCDC operatives on surveillance, supported by members of the Vigilante Group, swiftly moved in and arrested three of the suspects, while some other members of the gang reportedly escaped into the surrounding bush. The arrested suspects were paraded before the press and identified as Maitama Inuwa, a 30-year-old truck driver; Yahuza Danlami, 32; and Yasir Abdulrahman, 26.
A long commercial truck bearing the registration number MAK 159 XA was recovered, alongside 17 massive pieces of vandalised NNPC petroleum pipes loaded inside. Odumosu highlighted that the syndicate specifically targets isolated terrain to avoid detection. These vandals operate in remote and forested areas where petroleum pipelines transit through the FCT.
The NSCDC chief warned that the wider implications of such economic sabotage extend far beyond immediate infrastructural damage. Preliminary investigations suggest that the trio belong to a much larger syndicate, and four other suspects linked to the operation have been identified and remain at large. The Command will work tirelessly to identify the end-buyers and enforce the full weight of the Miscellaneous Offences Act.
