The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed 3,000 personnel across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to strengthen security ahead of Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary. The deployment, ordered by FCT Commandant Olusola Odumosu, aims to enforce law and order, ensuring the safety of lives and property before, during, and after the anniversary celebration. The deployed personnel comprise officers and men from various specialised departments and units of the Corps, including the Arms Squad, Female Strike Force, and Counter-Terrorism Unit. The NSCDC has also intensified security coverage of volatile areas and identified soft targets across the territory, including shopping malls, recreational centres, and markets.
The NSCDC's FCT Command has issued a statement, signed by Public Relations Officer Monica Ojobi, detailing the security measures in place. According to the statement, the undercover unit has commenced covert operations and surveillance to proactively identify and prevent potential security threats during the celebrations. The command is also monitoring black spots, including uncompleted buildings suspected of harbouring criminals.
Commandant Odumosu has directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Officers in the FCT to ensure their respective Area Councils remain adequately secured. He warned that he would not tolerate any security breach during the anniversary period, directing personnel to remain vigilant and comply with operational directives. Odumosu also charged NSCDC personnel to maintain discipline and good conduct while working with other security agencies.
The NSCDC has cautioned personnel to avoid accidental discharge while carrying out their duties and warned them against harassment or intimidation of citizens. Odumosu urged residents to complement the security efforts by remaining vigilant and promptly reporting suspicious movements to the nearest security agency. He assured residents that the NSCDC is taking measures to provide a secure environment throughout the Independence Anniversary period.
The FCT Command has also warned criminals and vandals against attacking or tampering with Critical National Assets and Infrastructure in the territory. Odumosu stated that NSCDC covert officers and patrol teams have been deployed across the city to take action against anyone found violating the law.
