The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Jigawa Command, has arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly vandalizing and stealing an armoured cable at the Birninkudu Township Water Station. According to the NSCDC's Public Relations Officer, ASC Badaruddeen Tijjani, the suspect was arrested on Sunday in Birninkudu Local Government Area of Jigawa state. The command received a report of the incident and immediately mobilized operatives to investigate.
The NSCDC operatives visited the scene and confirmed that the station's electrical system had been vandalized, with some components removed or damaged. Tijjani stated that the suspect was arrested with an armoured cable allegedly removed from the water station, which has been recovered and retained as an exhibit. The suspect, a resident of the Kurima area of Birninkudu, reportedly confessed to his alleged involvement during interrogation.
The suspect allegedly disclosed information about other cases of armoured cable theft and vandalism within and outside Birninkudu. He also reportedly told investigators that stolen cables were sold to scrap dealers. The NSCDC has expanded its investigation to identify and apprehend other individuals connected to the alleged theft and vandalism.
The state Commandant, CC Muhammad Kabiru-Ingawa, reaffirmed the command's commitment to protecting critical national assets and infrastructure across Jigawa state. Kabiru-Ingawa urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around critical infrastructure and government facilities to the NSCDC or other relevant security agencies.
The NSCDC's Jigawa Command received credible intelligence from the Birninkudu Peace and Security Group, which led to the arrest of the suspect. Tijjani stated that operatives under the coordination of the Divisional Officer succeeded in arresting the suspect at about 11:00 a.m. on the same day.
The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue, with further action expected in accordance with the law. The NSCDC's efforts aim to curb vandalism and theft of critical infrastructure in Jigawa state. The command's proactive measures have led to the recovery of stolen assets and the apprehension of suspects.
