The National Sports Commission (NSC) has officially recognised the Association of Retired Nigerian Sportsmen and Women (RENISA) as the umbrella body for coordinating the affairs and interests of retired Nigerian athletes. This recognition was conveyed in a letter dated October 8, 2026, signed by Kabir Yusuf on behalf of the NSC Director-General, Bukola Olopade. RENISA was established in 2019 to promote the welfare, unity, and physical well-being of retired Nigerian sportsmen and women.
RENISA aims to use sports as a tool for healthy living, social inclusion, and mentorship, while preserving Nigeria's rich sporting heritage. The association also seeks to provide a platform for retired athletes to share their experiences and expertise with future generations. According to the NSC letter, RENISA's recognition is subject to the association conducting its affairs in a democratic manner, governed by its constitution, relevant legislation, and directives of its elected executive officers.
The NSC letter outlined the terms of recognition, stating that RENISA shall serve as the statutory platform for preserving, documenting, and promoting the wealth of experience, knowledge, and contributions of retired athletes. The commission also emphasised that RENISA's operations must align with the policies, guidelines, and regulations of the NSC. This recognition is expected to strengthen RENISA's operations and enhance its ability to serve retired athletes.
RENISA President and former Nigerian athlete, Sunday Adeleye, expressed gratitude to the NSC Chairman, Shehu Dikko, and the Director-General, Bukola Olopade, for the recognition. Adeleye stated that their interests in the well-being and welfare of Nigerian athletes have yielded positive results, citing recent medals and podium finishes in regional and international competitions. He assured that RENISA will continue to prioritise the welfare of retired athletes.
Adeleye also announced plans to host RENISA's maiden Sports Fiesta in Abuja from September 17 to 26, 2027, featuring 17 sporting events. The event aims to promote sports development, unity, and healthy living among retired athletes and the general public. The Sports Fiesta is expected to provide a platform for retired athletes to showcase their skills, mentor young athletes, and foster social inclusion.
The recognition of RENISA by the NSC is expected to have a positive impact on the welfare of retired athletes in Nigeria. By providing a statutory platform for coordinating their affairs and interests, RENISA can now effectively promote the well-being and unity of its members. The association's focus on sports development, mentorship, and social inclusion aligns with the NSC's goals for promoting sports development in Nigeria.
The NSC's recognition of RENISA demonstrates its commitment to supporting the welfare of retired athletes and promoting sports development in Nigeria. The commission's emphasis on democratic governance and alignment with its policies and regulations ensures that RENISA operates transparently and effectively. With this recognition, RENISA is poised to make a positive impact on the lives of retired athletes and the broader sports community in Nigeria.
