The National Sports Commission and the National Institute for Sports have congratulated Samson Adamu on his appointment as the substantive General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football. This appointment is a significant milestone for Nigeria, marking the first time a Nigerian has held this influential position in CAF's 70-year history. Adamu's confirmation, announced on October 29, 2026, has been hailed as a landmark achievement for Nigeria and a major boost to the country's influence in international sports administration.

The Director-General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, and his counterpart at the NIS, Comrade Philip Shaibu, have separately congratulated Adamu on his appointment. They described his emergence as a recognition of his competence, professional experience, and years of dedication to football development. Olopade said Adamu's appointment represented a moment of national pride and demonstrated the growing depth of Nigerian expertise in continental sports governance.

Adamu's background in sports administration and management has equipped him for this role. He studied Business Management and Computer Science at the American University of Paris before obtaining a postgraduate qualification through the FIFA Master programme in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, graduating in 2009. This strong educational foundation has supported his career progression in sports marketing and event management.

Before joining CAF, Adamu built his career in sports marketing and event management through Kinetic Sport Management. He played a leading role in establishing and organising Copa Lagos, an international beach soccer tournament that helped raise Nigeria's profile in the sport. Adamu joined CAF in 2018 as Director of Competitions and later served as Director of Tournaments and Events, overseeing key aspects of competition planning, match operations, and tournament delivery.

Adamu became Acting General Secretary in March 2026 following the resignation of Véron Mosengo-Omba. His confirmation as the substantive office holder has been widely regarded as a major achievement for Nigerian football administration. This appointment places a Nigerian at the helm of CAF's day-to-day administration and offers an opportunity to contribute further to the growth of football across Africa.

The NSC and NIS have praised Adamu's appointment as an inspiration to young Nigerian sports administrators. Olopade said this achievement should encourage young Nigerians to understand that sports administration offers enormous opportunities for professional growth and international recognition. Adamu's emergence has reinforced Nigeria's capacity to contribute meaningfully to the leadership and development of sports across Africa.

Shaibu described Adamu's confirmation as a significant milestone for Nigeria and African football, noting that it reflected the country's growing international recognition and influence in the administration of the game. With this appointment, Nigeria is poised to play a more significant role in shaping the future of African football, and Adamu is well-positioned to make a lasting impact in his new role.
