The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans for a nationwide demonstration on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. The protest, under the slogan "Yɛgye yɛ sika", aims to intensify pressure on the government to account for public funds spent on the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa and provide greater transparency concerning the distribution and approval of official travel documents.
The NPP's National Youth Organiser, Abanga Fuseini Yakubu, announced the demonstration at a press conference on Thursday, October 29. He urged party supporters and the public to join the march, emphasizing accountability in the management of public resources and official documents as a responsibility owed to the Ghanaian people. Mr Yakubu maintained that public funds and official documents belonged to the Republic and must be administered responsibly.
The party has accused Mr Ablakwa of wrongdoing in connection with the evacuation expenditure and passport-related concerns. However, these allegations remain claims requiring proper investigation. The NPP is demanding the immediate removal of Mr Ablakwa from his position as Foreign Affairs Minister and independent investigations into the disputed expenditure and passport issuance.
The protest will start at 6:00 a.m. at Villaggio, near the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange and opposite Accra Mall. Participants will proceed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and end the demonstration at Jubilee House, the seat of government. Mr Yakubu called on party youth organisers, constituency and polling station executives, women's groups, and other supporters to mobilise for the exercise.
The NPP is demanding the publication of original invoices, contractual agreements, and proof of payment relating to all chartered flights used in transporting Ghanaians from South Africa. The party also wants the government to disclose details of all diplomatic and service passports issued since January 2025, identifying each recipient's qualifying official position or status and the authority responsible for approving the issuance.
The proposed demonstration marks a further escalation in the NPP's criticism of Mr Ablakwa. The party is seeking both ministerial accountability and greater public disclosure concerning the evacuation exercise and the administration of diplomatic and service passports. The allegations will require scrutiny of relevant documents, responses from officials, and findings from competent investigative authorities.
The NPP's demands include an independent audit of the overall expenditure to determine the amount spent and verify supporting financial records. The party also wants the cancellation of any passports established to have been issued contrary to applicable rules and requirements. The demonstration is scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, as the NPP seeks to bring its demands before the government and the wider public.
