The New Patriotic Party (NPP) of Ghana has issued a directive to all prospective parliamentary aspirants, their agents, and supporters to immediately suspend campaign activities. This decision was made to prevent an uneven playing field and ensure unity and discipline within the party. The directive, signed by the party's General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, was issued on October 11, 2026.
According to the NPP, several complaints were received regarding some members seeking to contest parliamentary primaries who had begun campaigning in various constituencies. The party described these activities as a breach of its regulations and Code of Conduct. The directive covers a range of activities, including mounting posters, billboards, and banners, as well as organizing rallies and meetings with polling station executives.
The NPP has also prohibited the distribution of items or other inducements to delegates and party members, alongside paid media and social media advertisements promoting individual aspirants. Furthermore, party officers at all levels have been warned against using their positions or social media platforms to promote prospective candidates before the approved campaign period.
The directive applies to officers at the polling station, electoral area, constituency, regional, and national levels, as well as members of the party's Tertiary Students Confederacy Network (TESCON). They are prohibited from posting content in support of parliamentary aspirants on platforms such as Facebook, X, and Instagram. The party warned that prospective aspirants and others who fail to comply with the directive would face disciplinary action.
The NPP has tasked constituency and regional executives with ensuring strict compliance with the directive within their respective jurisdictions. The party warned that failure to comply may affect the eligibility of prospective aspirants to contest. The official arrangements for the selection of parliamentary candidates are yet to be communicated, with the party set to announce the timetable and guidelines for its parliamentary processes in due course.
The move by the NPP is aimed at ensuring a level playing field for all prospective parliamentary aspirants and preventing any actions that could undermine the party's unity and discipline. The party's General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, emphasized that the directive is binding on all members and that any person who fails to comply will be dealt with in accordance with the party's disciplinary procedures.
The NPP's decision to suspend campaign activities is a significant development in the party's preparations for the upcoming parliamentary primaries. The party's leadership is expected to provide further guidance on the timetable and guidelines for the primaries in the coming days.
