Russian energy company NOVATEK has unveiled the Gravity Platform energy hub for Africa at the 3rd Russia-Africa summit and economic forum. The hub is designed to provide a comprehensive energy solution for the continent, addressing the issue of energy poverty in landlocked countries. According to NOVATEK's vice-president, Sergey Solovyov, the technology is unique globally and can resolve energy access challenges.
The Gravity Platform is an industrial energy hub based on a gravitational platform that serves as a docking station, LNG storage facility, regasification terminal, and power plant with a capacity of up to 1GW. The platform measures 290m by 70m and can be installed at depths of up to 13m without requiring dredging or port infrastructure. It has the capacity to receive up to 7 million tonnes of LNG per year.
Solovyov highlighted that the platform's design allows for streamlined construction and deployment, with only coordination and connection to the grid required on-site. The platform can be installed in just three months, making it an efficient solution for energy provision. He emphasized that the hub can serve multiple countries, with a coastal country acting as the energy gateway for the region.
The energy hub addresses a significant challenge in Africa, where over 550 million people in sub-Saharan Africa lack access to electricity. Solovyov noted that the LNG market in Africa is expected to reach 20-30 million tonnes per year, with much of this demand yet to be met by existing contracts and terminals. The Gravity Platform technology can help bridge this gap.
NOVATEK's technology has been pioneered in the Arctic region, and Solovyov expressed confidence that it can be successfully applied in Africa. He assured that the gravitational platform technology can provide rapid and affordable energy supplies to the African coast. The company aims to capitalize on the growing demand for energy in Africa.
The unveiling of the Gravity Platform energy hub took place during a meeting at the Russia-Africa summit, where discussions focused on strengthening economic and humanitarian ties between Russia and Africa. The summit provided a platform for NOVATEK to showcase its innovative energy solution and explore potential partnerships with African countries.
The introduction of the Gravity Platform energy hub is expected to have a significant impact on Africa's energy landscape. With its unique design and capabilities, the hub has the potential to provide a reliable and efficient energy supply to multiple countries, helping to address the continent's energy poverty challenges and support economic growth.
