The North Central region of Nigeria has initiated a grassroots mobilization movement to garner support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima as they prepare for the 2027 general elections. This movement, known as the North Central Grassroots Mobilisation Movement, was launched during a meeting at the office of Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), in Abuja on Friday, October 3, 2026.
Senator George Akume praised Arc. Sonny S.T. Echono, the National Coordinator of the movement, for making this initiative a reality. Akume emphasized that the North Central region aims to achieve the highest number of votes for President Tinubu in the upcoming election. This development indicates a strategic effort to consolidate support for the APC in the region.
Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State described the initiative as timely, noting that challenges leading up to the 2027 election are slowly fading away. He expressed confidence that the region will provide a large number of votes for both President Tinubu and other APC candidates, citing recent voter registration data that shows strong backing for the APC in North Central.
The Governor highlighted that the political influence of the North Central region is stronger now than it was before the last general election, especially with key positions like SGF, APC National Chairman, and several important political appointments. This, he believes, will significantly contribute to the success of the APC in the region.
Arc. Sonny S.T. Echono mentioned that the goal has shifted from just ensuring President Tinubu could win in North Central to making sure the region contributes the most votes for him in 2027. He praised Akume, the North Central Governors’ Forum, and other important people in the area for their dedication and backing of the administration.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, described this movement as a groundbreaking effort. The forum agreed to ramp up efforts to support President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections to achieve the highest number of votes from the region. They also decided to hold a large rally in Lafia, Nasarawa State, along with a medical outreach program.
The planned activities include setting up a Reconciliation Committee and organizing town hall meetings throughout the region. The Minister of Information and National Orientation will work with state information commissioners, publicity secretaries, and publicity committees to raise awareness about this initiative with the help of state governors. A large rally is scheduled for October 10, 2026, in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
