Somali Magazine launched the nomination process for the 8th edition of the 100 Most Influential Somali People Awards on October 1, 2026. The awards acknowledge Somalis globally who have made a significant impact in various fields, including business, politics, sports, and journalism. The nomination window is open until November 20, 2026, with the final list to be unveiled on December 10, 2026.

The awards span eight categories: politicians and leaders, business, sports, Islamic scholars, activists, journalists, social influencers, and entertainment. According to Ridwan Yusuf Mohamud, the organizer, the exercise aims to recognize leadership and document the broader contribution of the Somali community worldwide. The eligibility criteria extend beyond Somalia's borders, covering Somali communities in Kenya, other East African countries, and the global diaspora.

Last year, approximately 1.7 million people were nominated across various categories, reflecting the growing scale of the awards. Mohamud emphasized that the awards encourage entrepreneurship by publicly naming achievers, allowing others to follow their example. The awards also seek to generate significant economic value for the Somali community globally.

Eastleigh, a Nairobi district, was cited as an example of the Somali community's economic weight in Kenya. The district, driven by Somali-owned businesses, has grown into a commercial hub serving buyers and traders from across East Africa. Daily M-Pesa transactions in Eastleigh amount to up to KSh 5 billion, demonstrating the community's significant economic activity.

Somali-owned businesses have expanded beyond Eastleigh into other parts of Nairobi and Kenyan towns, contributing to job creation and tax revenue. The awards, Mohamud said, aim to celebrate the community's achievements and encourage others to follow their example. Nominations can be submitted through Somali Magazine before the November 20, 2026 deadline.

One notable example of a Somali entrepreneur is Abdirahman Hussein Mohamed, CEO and co-founder of Wara Fragrance, which has products in over 1,000 outlets across four East African countries. Mohamed's company was named Business of the Year at the SOBA Awards 2026, and he received the Outstanding Excellence in Business award.

The 100 Most Influential Somali People Awards recognize individuals who have made a measurable impact over the past year. The awards provide a platform to celebrate the achievements of Somalis worldwide and encourage others to make a positive impact in their communities.
