The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has announced plans to invest $10 billion in the OgunLNG project in Ogun Waterside, Ogun State. This development marks a fresh phase in the revival of the long-delayed gas project. NNPC's Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Adedapo Segun, led a meeting with Governor Dapo Abiodun to discuss the project's revival. The project has been on hold for over three decades.
Governor Abiodun revealed that NNPC has commenced discussions with the state government to revive the project. The talks focused on land requirements, incentives, and arrangements necessary for the project's smooth take-off. The state government assured NNPC of its full cooperation. Abiodun described the renewed interest in OgunLNG as a significant development for Ogun State and Nigeria, citing its potential to strengthen the country's energy supply.
The OgunLNG project is expected to provide gas for industries and support large-scale industrialisation. Governor Abiodun noted that the project would have significant multiplier effects, particularly in employment generation. He cited the NNPC's facility in Bonny, Rivers State, where about 14,000 people are employed, as an indication of the potential employment impact of the OgunLNG project.
The revival of OgunLNG comes after the Ogun State government signed agreements with DP World for the development of the Gateway Deep Sea Port and the Ogun State Blue Marine Special Economic Zone. The deal is expected to attract over $7 billion in initial investment. Abiodun said the LNG project, deep seaport, and Blue Marine Special Economic Zone could collectively create an integrated ecosystem linking energy, manufacturing, and maritime trade.
Governor Abiodun said the development would reinforce Ogun's position as an industrial centre and position Ogun Waterside as an emerging energy and maritime hub. The agreements signed with DP World provide for a $7 billion-plus initial investment, with the proposed economic zone covering approximately 10,000 hectares.
The OgunLNG project was originally designed and called OKLNG, meant to be situated on Ogun's coastline. NNPC's renewed interest in the project has brought it back to life. The project's revival is seen as a significant development for Ogun State and Nigeria, with potential benefits for the country's energy supply and industrialisation.
The NNPC and Ogun State government's collaboration on the OgunLNG project is expected to yield significant results. The project's success could create new opportunities for economic growth, employment, and industrial development in Ogun State and Nigeria. Key discussions between NNPC and the state government have paved the way for the project's implementation.
