NMB Bank Plc has secured a $30m loan from China Development Bank (CDB) to increase access to financing for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Tanzania. The financing agreement was signed at NMB Bank's headquarters in Dar es Salaam, strengthening cooperation between the two financial institutions. This partnership aims to support business expansion, investment, and trade in Tanzania.

According to NMB Bank Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Ruth Zaipuna, small businesses are central to Tanzania's economy, but many entrepreneurs struggle to access financing to expand their operations. The $30m facility will enhance the bank's ability to respond to the financing needs of SMEs.

The partnership between NMB Bank and CDB is expected to strengthen relationships between Tanzanian and Chinese financial institutions and business partners. NMB Bank provides renminbi (RMB) payment services, RMB-denominated business accounts, and trade finance solutions to facilitate transactions between Tanzania and China.

Through its partnership with China's Cross-border Interbank Payment System (CIPS), NMB Bank facilitates trade between Tanzania and China. The bank also organizes Canton Fair business tours, connecting Tanzanian entrepreneurs with Chinese manufacturers and suppliers to explore commercial opportunities and establish new trading relationships. This agreement enhances NMB Bank's capacity to support Tanzanian enterprises engaged in trade with China.

The $30m loan from CDB follows NMB Bank's recognition as Tanzania's Best SME Bank for 2026 by Global Finance. This award reflects the bank's focus on supporting small and medium-sized businesses in Tanzania. The facility is expected to strengthen financial cooperation between Tanzania and China, supporting private-sector investment, financial inclusion, and the country's long-term development priorities.

The agreement aligns with Tanzania's National Development Vision 2050, which aims to drive economic growth and development through private-sector investment. By increasing access to financing for SMEs, NMB Bank and CDB are supporting the growth of Tanzania's economy. The partnership is expected to have a positive impact on the country's economic development and financial inclusion.
