The Nationwide League One (NLO) has introduced a new format for its NLO Cup, shifting from a single-match knockout arrangement to a regional home-and-away league format. This change aims to provide participating clubs with more matches and improve players' competitive exposure. The number of fixtures each team plays will depend on the total number of clubs in its zone, potentially leading to up to 18 matches for teams in a 10-club group.

According to NLO Chief Operating Officer Olushola Ogunnowo, the new structure addresses the need for more playing opportunities while creating a sustainable competitive environment for clubs. The expanded schedule will enable clubs to host more matches before their supporters, gain experience from away fixtures, and expose players to competitive football. This, in turn, is expected to strengthen their sporting and commercial prospects.

The league also expects the new format to promote youth development, deepen fan engagement, and strengthen the relationship between clubs and their host communities. To ease logistics, multiple clubs will be permitted to host their home matches at the same venues, with fixtures scheduled on weekdays or weekends. This arrangement aims to make the competition more manageable for participating teams while ensuring a smoother fixture schedule.

The revamped format is designed to provide a more structured environment for clubs to develop their teams and establish stronger competitive identities. Mr. Ogunnowo stated that the revitalized NLO Cup advances a more structured and competitive environment for NLO clubs. With more fixtures, players can showcase their skills, coaches can improve teams, and clubs can enhance their competitive identity.

The home-and-away arrangement will give players the experience of competing before home supporters while preparing them for the demands of away matches. Mr. Ogunnowo noted that this format will motivate clubs to enjoy the excitement of playing in front of supporters and to tackle the challenges of away games. The NLO Cup is scheduled to kick off on October 10, 2026.

Eligible clubs from NLO Division One and the NLO Youth League Under-19 are required to pay a non-refundable registration fee of ₦1 million to participate in the NLO Cup. The fee covers tournament logistics, and payments must be made directly into the NLO's designated account with FCMB. Participating clubs must submit proof of payment to the NLO Secretariat for verification and registration clearance.

The NLO Cup forms part of the NLO's efforts to expand playing opportunities, improve talent development, and create greater visibility for clubs and players within Nigeria's lower-tier football structure. The competition is expected to enhance the overall football experience for clubs, players, and fans, contributing to the growth of Nigerian football.
