The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has started testing a digital platform designed to improve access to weather and climate information for farmers and agricultural stakeholders. The platform, known as the NiMet Data Hub, was developed in partnership with the International Livestock Research Institute and Crea2Solutions. It aims to provide reliable access to historical, monitored, and forecast climate information. The project began in February 2026 under the Climate Services for Youth and Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa programmes.
The development of the NiMet Data Hub addresses persistent weaknesses in agricultural climate services, including fragmented data and limited coordination among information providers. The platform seeks to improve access to climate information and support risk analysis, seasonal planning, and climate-informed decision-making. According to NiMet, the hub will serve farmers, pastoralists, extension professionals, researchers, government institutions, and private advisory providers.
The NiMet Data Hub has advanced from the design and mock-up stage to an advanced Minimum Viable Product. By July 2026, the project had progressed from early design to a testable product. Stakeholder engagement co-hosted by NiMet and ILRI focused on mapping Nigeria's agro-meteorological data and advisory landscape and identifying gaps in information availability and delivery.
The platform is expected to support preparedness, reduce climate-related losses, and strengthen agri-food livelihoods. It will provide context-specific agro-weather advisories by integrating NiMet resources, including online map rooms and agricultural climate products. The development of the hub aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, prioritizing food security, climate-smart agriculture, and digital services.
The initiative aims to strengthen the link between meteorological information and agricultural decision-making by making climate data more accessible. It also seeks to improve coordination among institutions involved in collecting, processing, and delivering agricultural climate information. Effective communication between technical service providers and end-users will be enhanced.
The project is consistent with ILRI's wider work of organizing research data and developing digital tools to make information more usable for partners and decision-makers. NiMet and its partners will continue testing the platform and refining its services as the Data Hub moves towards wider deployment. This comes amid growing efforts to strengthen climate-smart agriculture and improve farmers' ability to respond to changing weather conditions.
