The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is set to host a two-part stakeholder webinar on October 6 and 8, 2026, to showcase the ongoing automation of the Nigerian Ship Registry. This move is part of efforts to modernize ship registration services and enhance the competitiveness of the Nigerian flag. The webinars will provide stakeholders with insights into the new digital registration platform.
The automated system is designed to enable 24/7 access to registration services, streamline application and approval processes, and facilitate faster issuance of electronic certificates. This will reduce administrative delays associated with conventional paper-based procedures. The platform will also provide secure and real-time tracking of ship mortgages and related registry transactions, strengthening transparency and visibility for stakeholders.
The automation initiative aims to make interaction with the Nigerian Ship Registry more seamless for local and international ship-owners. It will also improve NIMASA's ability to deliver efficient, responsive, and globally competitive flag-state services. According to NIMASA, the webinars will provide an opportunity for stakeholders to understand the platform, experience its key features, and provide feedback as the Agency moves towards full implementation.
The Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, emphasized that the automation of the Ship Registry is part of the Agency's broader commitment to transforming the Nigerian flag. The goal is to create an enabling environment for increased participation in the global shipping industry. Dr. Mobereola stated that the automation represents a significant step in providing efficient, transparent, and globally competitive services.
The ongoing user-testing phase is focused on validating the platform's functionality, security, and user experience ahead of its official deployment. This phase is crucial in ensuring that the platform meets international standards and is user-friendly. NIMASA's efforts are geared towards making the Nigerian flag more accessible, responsive, and attractive through technology-driven processes.
The webinars will bring together ship-owners, operators, maritime professionals, financial institutions, insurers, and other stakeholders. They will have the opportunity to gain insights into the new digital registration platform and its potential to improve the speed, transparency, and efficiency of ship registration and related services. This move is expected to have a positive impact on the Nigerian shipping industry.
The automation of the Nigerian Ship Registry is a significant development in the country's maritime sector.
