Stakeholders in Nigeria's education sector have called on teachers to view technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) as tools to enhance their profession rather than threats. This appeal was made during the 59th National Conference of Delegates of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Enugu. Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, highlighted the potential benefits of AI in education, including assisting teachers in lesson preparation, personalizing learning, identifying learning gaps, and expanding access to knowledge.
Governor Mbah noted that while AI has the potential to significantly impact education, it cannot replace the human qualities that define effective teaching. He stated that the future of education is not about pitting teachers against technology, but about leveraging technology to enhance teaching. According to the governor, AI should be regarded as a "handmaid of development" that can make teachers more productive, innovative, and effective.
Governor Mbah disclosed that his administration has made significant investments in education over the past 40 months. He revealed that more than 33 percent of the state's total budget across three budget cycles had been allocated to the education sector. This investment has enabled the recruitment of 6,850 teachers and other education personnel to address manpower shortages and improve the student-teacher ratio.
In addition to recruiting more teachers, the Enugu State government is developing Smart Green Schools across the state's 260 wards. These technology-driven schools are designed to prepare children for the future. Governor Mbah stressed that the transformation of education must also include investment in the people responsible for delivering it – the teachers.
