The Nigerian Navy has intensified its grassroots security intervention with the construction of a perimeter fence at Omolaye Community Primary School in Ikorodu North Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State. This project is part of the Navy's efforts to address community needs through initiatives with direct benefits for residents. The facility was executed under the Chief of the Naval Staff's Special Intervention Quick Impact Project Scheme.
The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, stated that the intervention underscored the importance of community development to national security. He emphasized that lasting peace and national prosperity depended not only on military operations but also on initiatives that improved the welfare and security of communities. The Naval Chief was represented by the Director of Manning at the Naval Headquarters.
The perimeter fence project aims to provide a more secure and conducive environment for teaching and learning at the school, contributing to the wider development of the community. Vice Admiral Idi Abbas described the project as an important investment in education, noting that a safe learning environment was essential to improving educational outcomes and the quality of life of residents.
Rear Admiral Adedotun Ayo-Vaughan, the project facilitator, said the initiative reflected the Navy's recognition that military operations alone could not guarantee lasting security without the support and confidence of the people. He explained that the project was designed to protect the school from unauthorized access and reduce incidents of theft and burglary.
The commissioning ceremony highlighted the value of cooperation between public institutions and local communities in delivering infrastructure that supports security, stability, and development. Vice Admiral Idi Abbas reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy's commitment to sustaining partnerships with communities across the country through interventions designed to promote peace, security, and progress.
The Special Intervention Quick Impact Project Scheme was introduced in 2024 as a strategic initiative to strengthen civil-military cooperation across Nigeria. The scheme provides senior naval officers with opportunities to execute projects that address critical social needs in their communities and complement government development efforts.
The Nigerian Navy's efforts to enhance school security come amid growing recognition of the need to provide safer environments for schools and other public institutions, particularly at the community level. The Navy said it would continue to pursue community-focused initiatives under its civil-military cooperation framework, with the aim of strengthening public confidence in the Armed Forces and contributing to national development.
