A 30-year-old man, Chibuike Okpara, has confessed to killing his girlfriend, dismembering her body, and hiding it in a toilet in his apartment in Enugu State. The police arrested Okpara on September 19, after neighbors reported a foul odor coming from his apartment. According to the police, the victim, Chinyere Ugwu, was a 27-year-old graduate of Medical Laboratory Science who had recently completed the mandatory National Youth Service Corps programme.

In a video interview, Okpara revealed that he killed Ugwu over an argument about who infected the other with HIV. He claimed that he had told Ugwu that he could cure Hepatitis C, HIV, and syphilis, which led to an argument. Okpara stated that Ugwu accused him of infecting her with HIV, and a fight ensued, resulting in her death. He hit her with a pestle, which caused her to collapse.

Okpara further revealed that he dismembered Ugwu's body, chopping off her wrist and making cuts on her head. He claimed that he dumped the body in the toilet because he did not know what to do at the time. Neighbors who perceived an offensive odor forced their way into the apartment and discovered the body. Okpara also confessed to damaging Ugwu's mobile phone and SIM card to prevent her family from contacting her.

According to the police spokesperson in Enugu State, Daniel Ndukwe, the police have identified Ugwu's parents and siblings. Ndukwe assured that Okpara would be prosecuted for his crime. The police also revealed that Okpara and Ugwu met on Facebook in 2023, and Okpara relocated from Owerri in Imo State to Enugu in December 2025.

Okpara claimed that he was under the influence of drugs when he committed the crime. He stated that he was not fully aware of himself at the time and was probably on some substance. Okpara pleaded for mercy, stressing that the killing was not intentional. He appealed to the government to temper justice with mercy.

The case highlights the dangers of substance abuse and the need for mental health support. Okpara's claims of being under the influence of drugs at the time of the crime raise questions about the role of substance abuse in violent crimes. The police are expected to present Okpara in court for prosecution.

The incident has sparked outrage and calls for justice for Ugwu and her family. The police have assured that they will ensure justice is served in this case. Okpara's confession and plea for mercy have sparked a debate about the need for compassion and understanding in the justice system.
