Indian authorities have identified a Nigerian national as an alleged intermediary in an international drug trafficking network. The identification was made following the interception of an Iranian vessel carrying narcotics worth over $330m in the Arabian Sea. The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) reportedly played a crucial role in the identification. The operation involved the joint efforts of the Gujarat ATS and the Indian Coast Guard.
The Iranian vessel was intercepted on September 25, during a joint operation involving the Gujarat ATS and the Indian Coast Guard. Authorities seized 526kg of narcotics, comprising 400kg of methamphetamine and 126kg of heroin. The consignment was allegedly part of a larger trafficking operation. Intelligence reports suggested that the Nigerian national had met with a wanted suspect from Gujarat in Ahmedabad.
According to investigators, the Nigerian national had links to a trafficking network associated with Pakistan-based suspected drug trafficker Haji Salim. The network allegedly planned to move the seized consignment to Punjab for distribution across northern India. The investigation revealed that the drugs were expected to be transferred from the Iranian vessel to a fishing boat within Indian waters.
The Gujarat ATS and the Indian Coast Guard intercepted the vessel northwest of Lakshadweep. Five Pakistani nationals aboard the Iranian vessel were arrested during the operation. The vessel was also reportedly found with a Starlink device allegedly used to maintain communication with handlers based in Pakistan.
Authorities have continued investigating the case to identify other suspected members of the network and determine the Nigerian’s precise involvement in the operation. The Gujarat ATS said investigations into the suspected international drug trafficking network remained ongoing. The ATS is working to unravel the entire network and identify all individuals involved.
The seizure of the narcotics and the identification of the Nigerian national as a link to the international drug trafficking network have dealt a significant blow to the operation. The Indian authorities are working to prevent the distribution of the narcotics and to bring all individuals involved to justice. The case highlights the ongoing efforts of Indian authorities to combat drug trafficking.
The incident underscores the complexity of international drug trafficking networks and the need for continued cooperation between law enforcement agencies.
