Major General Ibikunle Ajose, Theatre Commander of Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), has urged 925 newly trained Borno State Forest Guards to remain fearless and decisive in their support for counter-terrorism efforts across the state. The charge was given at their graduation ceremony in Yobe State, following a two-week training program. The Forest Guards were trained at the North-East Theatre Training School (NETTS) in Buni Yadi.
The training aimed to equip the Forest Guards with the skills and knowledge needed to complement ongoing military operations and enhance counter-terrorism efforts. Major General Ajose emphasized that their knowledge of the local terrain would be invaluable in supporting military operations. He also urged the Forest Guards to apply their skills responsibly and respect law-abiding citizens.
The graduation ceremony was attended by the Executive Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, represented by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Tar. Professor Tar stated that the Forest Guard initiative was established to provide auxiliary support to the Armed Forces and other security agencies. The 925 personnel were drawn from the 27 Local Government Areas of Borno State.
According to Professor Tar, the Forest Guards will be handed over to the Theatre Command for deployment based on operational requirements. Their knowledge of the local terrain, languages, and culture is expected to enhance their effectiveness as force multipliers in support of ongoing operations. The Forest Guards were trained to build their confidence, resilience, discipline, and adaptability.
Brigadier General Amadike Onaogu, Commandant of NETTS, explained that the training was designed to equip the Forest Guards with relevant competencies to complement ongoing security operations. He emphasized that the training was not intended to transform them into soldiers but to support security efforts within their areas of responsibility.
Major General Ajose commended the Borno State Government for its sustained support for security efforts in the state. He also appreciated the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, for his guidance and support for Operation Hadin Kai and the training program. The Theatre Commander further charged the newly graduated Forest Guards to uphold discipline and professionalism.
The Theatre Commander reaffirmed OPHK’s commitment to sustaining operational pressure against terrorists while deepening cooperation with other security agencies. The Forest Guards are expected to play a crucial role in supporting military operations in Borno State. Key initiatives like this are essential in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria.
