The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 38-year-old Nigerian businessman, Philip Tunde, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. Tunde was intercepted on September 27, 2026, while preparing to board a Royal Air Maroc flight to Milan, Italy. According to the NDLEA, officers subjected Tunde to a thorough search, which led to the discovery of 4.80 kilogrammes of alleged illicit substances.

The illicit substances were cleverly concealed in two separate hiding spots. Agents recovered 16 parcels of illicit white powder from the soles of eight pairs of trainers and canvas shoes. A further 195 wraps of the same substance were extracted from the metal railings of four travelling bags belonging to Tunde. The sophisticated concealment method suggests a deliberate attempt to smuggle the substances through one of Nigeria's busiest international terminals.

The NDLEA's airport command has been at the forefront of the agency's interception efforts, with the recent operations drawing commendation for officers stationed at MMIA, Apapa, Tincan, Port Harcourt, and other commands across the country. The agency has been working tirelessly to curb the smuggling of illicit substances through Nigeria's airports. Tunde's arrest is a significant breakthrough in this effort.

The NDLEA's operations are not limited to the airport. In Kogi State, officers stopped a Lagos-Abuja commuter bus on the Okene-Lokoja highway on September 30, recovering one kilogramme of alleged methamphetamine hidden in two sachets. The suspected owner, Michael Chukwuememeka Uzoma, 29, was subsequently arrested in Utako, Abuja. This arrest demonstrates the agency's commitment to tackling drug trafficking across Nigeria.

The NDLEA also conducted a raid in Edo State, which yielded 32.2 kilograms of illicit sativa. Osazuwa Iyabor Michael, 23, was arrested at the Auchi Bypass in Benin City carrying multiple drug types. In Plateau State, Idris Mohammed Kurra, 47, a fugitive who had spent six years evading arrest, was finally caught on September 29. These arrests demonstrate the agency's relentless pursuit of individuals involved in drug trafficking.

The NDLEA's efforts to curb drug trafficking extend beyond arrests. The agency also conducted sensitisation lectures at schools across Enugu, Lagos, Ikorodu, Kano, Ado Ekiti, and Lokoja as part of its wider anti-drug awareness campaign. This initiative aims to educate young people about the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking. By engaging with schools, the NDLEA hopes to prevent drug-related problems from arising in the first place.

The arrest of Philip Tunde has sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians commending the NDLEA for its efforts to curb drug trafficking. Some social media users praised the agency for its diligence, while others expressed concern about the sophistication of drug smuggling methods. The NDLEA's work in this area is crucial, and its efforts have been recognized by many.
