The Nigerian Army has started strategic patrols and stop-and-search operations in Oyo town and surrounding areas to enhance security and combat crime. The operations, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, began after an inspection by Maj. Gen. Auwalu Mahmuda on October 1, 2026. The deployment aims to deny criminals freedom of action in Oyo and other areas.

Residents of Oyo, Atiba, Afijio, Oyo East, and Oyo West local government areas have been informed about the operations, which involve troops deployed from their temporary base at Ote-Efon/Ojongbodu Barracks. The patrols and stop-and-search operations will focus on strategic locations, including major roads and areas around the Old Oyo National Park. The operations are part of efforts to strengthen security in the area.

The personal assistant to the Alaafin, Revd. Kolade Oladele, and the 7 Brigade Public Relations Officer in Oyo issued a security advisory, outlining measures to ensure residents' safety. The advisory warned residents to avoid unnecessary late-night movements, as those moving between 11 pm and 4:30 am would be treated as suspicious and subjected to thorough screening.

Residents are advised to cooperate with troops during security checks by providing valid identification and remaining polite. The advisory also cautioned against flashing torchlights at patrol vehicles or using lights to harass soldiers. Furthermore, residents are urged to report suspicious movements around farms, bushes, and abandoned buildings to the nearest barracks.

Commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators have been advised to ensure their vehicles have proper lights and number plates. The advisory emphasized that the operation aims to improve residents' safety, not to harass them. The Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has commended the Federal Government and pledged the support of the people of Oyo for the brigade.

The advisory called on residents to remain vigilant, cooperate with security personnel, and take necessary precautions to support efforts to improve security in the area. The operation is part of the Chief of Army Staff's directive to deny criminal elements freedom of action in Oyo, Kishi, Ile-Ife, and Oriire.
