The Federal Government of Nigeria is exploring stronger industrial ties with Germany to boost its steel production, mineral processing, technology transfer, and equipment manufacturing sectors. This was disclosed by the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, during a meeting with a delegation of German Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) in Abuja. The meeting aimed to translate previous discussions between Nigeria and Germany into concrete investment and industrial partnerships.
The discussions between Nigeria and Germany were initially held at the 9th German-African Economic Forum in Dortmund, Germany. The forum explored opportunities in steel production, mining, mineral processing, engineering, technology transfer, and industrial investment. Prince Audu noted that Nigeria's abundant mineral resources, growing market, and efforts to revitalize the steel sector presented attractive investment opportunities for German companies.
The Minister identified potential areas of cooperation with German OEMs, including modern technology, equipment manufacturing and supply, mineral processing, steel production, engineering services, skills development, technology transfer, and local value-chain development. He emphasized the Ministry's readiness to collaborate with German OEMs on ongoing and emerging projects in the steel and metallurgical sectors. Such partnerships, he believes, can support infrastructure development, manufacturing, job creation, and economic diversification.
Prince Audu expressed confidence that the engagement with German OEMs would lead to specific areas of collaboration and strengthen the longstanding bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Germany. The Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Nura Abba Rimi, noted that the engagement aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the establishment of the Ministry to revitalize Nigeria's steel sector and promote industrialization.
The Head of the German delegation, Dr. Chux Onaa, stated that the visit aimed to consolidate areas of cooperation and investment in Nigeria's steel industry. He added that German OEMs possess technologies capable of supporting raw-material processing, including applications in the cement and building-materials industries. This technology transfer can significantly enhance Nigeria's industrial capabilities.
