Nigerian lawmaker Abubakar Kabir Abubakar, popularly known as Abba Bichi, recently celebrated his 45th birthday in a grand style, with over 100 pages of full-colour advertisements published in a national newspaper. The advertisements, which were sponsored by various individuals and groups, including politicians, businesspeople, community leaders, and youth groups, congratulatory messages to Abba Bichi.

Abba Bichi, who represents Bichi Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has a reputation for impressive constituency interventions, including educational projects, computer laboratories, sporting facilities, student sponsorships, and housing projects. His efforts have earned him commendations from various quarters, including Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, despite being from a different political ideology.

However, the scale of the birthday celebration has sparked debate about the judgment and moderation of public figures in Nigeria. The cumulative commercial value of the hundreds of newspaper advertisements is substantial, raising questions about the optics of such extravagance, especially during a difficult economic period in Nigeria.

Abba Bichi was born on October 2, 1981, in Hagagawa quarters of Bichi, Kano State, into the family of a former state legislator and commissioner. He attended the New York Institute of Technology, where he earned degrees in Interdisciplinary Studies and Energy Management.

The lawmaker currently chairs the influential House Committee on Appropriations, one of the most consequential committees in the National Assembly for allocating and scrutinising public resources. His role in the committee has made his celebration even more sensitive, with some arguing that the extravagance could overshadow his achievements.

While Abba Bichi's supporters argue that the advertisements were independently sponsored by friends, political associates, contractors, community groups, businesses, and admirers, others have expressed concerns about the perception of extravagance and the need for moderation in public celebrations.

At 45, Abba Bichi remains relatively young, especially for a politician who has already occupied influential positions in the National Assembly. If his constituency record is as strong as his supporters claim, he has every reason to let his work advertise him, rather than relying on extravagant celebrations.
