The Nigeria Police Force has initiated preparations for the 2027 general elections with a comprehensive six-point security framework. This framework focuses on early intelligence, specialized training, inter-agency coordination, technology, community partnership, and strict police neutrality. Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, unveiled the roadmap at the opening of the 2026 Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers in Owerri, Imo State.
The framework emphasizes early identification of potential flashpoints, improved communication, protection of electoral personnel and materials, rapid response, and accountability among officers deployed for election duties. IGP Disu warned politicians and their supporters against violence, vote buying, movement of arms, and threats against voters or electoral officials. He urged contestants to focus on political competition rather than the use of thugs, stating, "Compete with ideas, not with thugs."
The preparations for the elections will run concurrently with ongoing police operations against kidnapping, banditry, terrorism, and communal violence. IGP Disu assured that the approaching electoral cycle would not reduce the Force's attention to existing security challenges. Since he assumed office in February 2026, police operations have resulted in significant arrests and recoveries, including 251 terrorists and suspected bandits, 343 murder suspects, and 947 firearms.
The police leadership is placing particular emphasis on repositioning its approach to election security by moving preparations further ahead of Election Day. IGP Disu stressed that the duty of the police does not begin on election day but covers the whole electoral cycle. Police commands are expected to identify possible flashpoints and criminal networks early, with intelligence passed through the command structure in sufficient time to support preventive action.
The training of personnel will be intensified, with an emphasis on crowd management, protection of electoral personnel and materials, conflict prevention, rapid response, and policing consistent with human rights. Particular attention will be given to ad-hoc personnel of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as well as voters who may require additional protection, including women, elderly citizens, and persons with disabilities.
The roadmap also includes closer operational coordination between the police, INEC, and other security and law-enforcement agencies. Technology will form part of the strategy, with improved communication and real-time reporting expected to strengthen situational awareness and response to incidents. IGP Disu identified election-related misinformation as another area requiring attention, particularly where false information could generate tension or trigger disorder.
The IGP restated the Force's commitment to neutrality during political contests and directed Commissioners of Police to strengthen supervision across their commands. He also ordered commands to make official contact numbers available to members of the public, stressing the importance of accessibility between police authorities and communities. The Nigeria Police Trust Fund, NPTF, assured that it would continue supporting the Force in areas such as training, equipment, and mobility as preparations intensify for the elections.
