The Nigeria Police Force has started pre-election security and clearance operations in Kogi, Niger, Benue, and Taraba states. This move aims to contain violence and create a safe environment for the 2027 general elections. The operations focus on stabilizing areas affected by security crises and restoring citizens' confidence. The police objective is to ensure Nigerians can freely participate in choosing their leaders without fear, intimidation, or disruption.

The Inspector-General of Police, represented by Assistant Inspector-General Alinyenu Idu, disclosed the operations while discussing police preparations and security arrangements for the elections. The police, in collaboration with the military, paramilitary organizations, and other security agencies, have activated operational and tactical assets to assess the security situation and address emerging threats. The agencies are concerned about pockets of fear created by the country's current security challenges.

Clearance operations are ongoing in Kogi, Niger, Benue, and Taraba, with the police working to "police the various crisis points" and restore social harmony before the election. Idu stated that election security begins long before voters arrive at polling units. The responsibilities of security agencies include protecting voters, election materials, transportation of sensitive materials, polling venues, collation centers, and result management.

The police assured vulnerable groups, including women and other categories of voters, of protection during the electoral process. Specific frameworks are being deployed to ensure all eligible citizens can participate without intimidation. The police are working closely with sister security agencies to review their operational framework and fuse their resources in response to emerging threats.

The security plan covers the entire electoral cycle, from pre-election activities through election day and the movement and protection of electoral materials to collation centers. The objective is to create an environment where citizens can "come out freely, feel friendly, and determine to elect the leaders" of their choice. The police will conduct a comprehensive review of its pre-election activities by November and a further assessment by December.

The police strategy is not limited to providing security at polling units but extends to securing election materials, transportation routes, collation centers, and other critical electoral infrastructure. Idu expressed optimism that the combined efforts of the police and other security agencies would help prevent violence and protect the legitimacy of the electoral process.

The ultimate objective is to ensure Nigerians can exercise their democratic rights without fear. The police called for continued cooperation among security agencies as preparations intensify, maintaining that a coordinated security architecture would be necessary to respond effectively to threats before, during, and after the elections.
