The 9th China International Import Expo (CIIE) is set to take place in Shanghai, China, from November 5 to 10. This annual event showcases products from various countries, with a focus on providing opportunities for foreign businesses to expand their exports to China. African nations are closely watching this event, hoping to capitalize on the chance to increase their exports to the Chinese market.

Several African countries are preparing to participate in the CIIE, with Gabon making its debut and the Democratic Republic of Congo planning to send a large delegation. The DRC will showcase its products, including cocoa, coffee, and timber. Zimbabwe, on the other hand, is relying on its traditional leather industry, aiming to sell more high-quality leather products to Chinese consumers.

China has been actively promoting free trade with African countries, with a focus on boosting economic ties. Since May 1, China has waived tariffs on 53 African countries that have established diplomatic relations with it. This move, combined with events like the CIIE, has enabled African nations to increase their exports to China. For example, Kenya’s tea exports to China have risen significantly, from 2 million kilograms in previous years to 12.4 million kilograms in 2025, with expectations to reach 20 million kilograms in 2026.

The CIIE has already shown positive results for some African countries. Madagascar’s Minister of Livestock, Riana Randrianomenjanahary, reported that since the country’s lamb products were first showcased at the 2024 CIIE, Madagascar has increased its lamb exports to China, creating jobs in rural areas and improving the livelihoods of at least 3,000 households.

China’s decision to host the CIIE is part of its efforts to fulfill its commitment to promoting mutual benefits in its international relations. By importing more foreign products, China aims to meet the demands of its domestic consumers for high-quality goods. The CIIE also encourages Chinese companies to improve their competitiveness.

The CIIE has contributed to the growth of international trade, with many developing countries increasing their exports to China. By hosting the CIIE, China demonstrates its commitment to openness and cooperation, showcasing its determination to maintain an open global economy.

As the CIIE approaches, African countries are eager to seize the opportunities it presents. With China’s continued support for free trade and economic cooperation, African nations are optimistic about increasing their exports and strengthening their economic ties with China.
