Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, has emphasized the need for Nigeria to strengthen its space capabilities to improve national security and the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces. He made this call at the inaugural Defence Space Administration (DSA) Day celebration held in Abuja. The event was themed "Space Power and National Security". Oluyede urged the DSA to focus on indigenous research and development.
Oluyede commended the DSA for its achievements, including the launch of DelSat-1, the establishment of geospatial intelligence infrastructure, and the Modular Earth Observation Outpost. He also noted the commencement of academic activities at the Defence Space School in Orogun. These achievements, according to him, demonstrate the potential of space technology in enhancing national security. The CDS charged the DSA to build on these achievements.
The Defence Chief stressed that developing homegrown space technology would enhance the military's capacity to obtain relevant intelligence, improve operational coordination, and respond more effectively to evolving security threats. He emphasized the need for stronger partnerships among the Armed Forces, academic institutions, industries, and relevant government agencies. This collaboration, Oluyede said, would help strengthen the country's indigenous capabilities.
Major General Philip Ilodibia, Chief of Defence Space Administration, called for greater synergy among the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, and Nigerian Air Force. He noted that closer cooperation among the three services was necessary to ensure that available space-based capabilities effectively supported military planning and operations. Ilodibia also called for sustained collaboration with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA).
Ilodibia underscored the importance of partnerships between defence institutions and civilian space agencies in strengthening research, developing indigenous solutions, and expanding the country's capacity to deploy space technology for strategic purposes. The DSA chief emphasized that such partnerships would help advance Nigeria's space capabilities in support of national security and development.
The Defence Space Administration's achievements demonstrate the potential of space technology in enhancing national security. The administration's focus on indigenous research and development is expected to improve the reliability and security of space-based products for military operations. The CDS's call for sustained investment in space technology is seen as a move to enhance Nigeria's space capabilities.
The event marked a significant milestone in Nigeria's efforts to harness space power for national security. The Defence Space Administration's inaugural day celebration highlighted the importance of space technology in modern warfare. As Nigeria continues to face evolving security threats, the need for a robust space capability has become increasingly important. Key initiatives, such as the Defence Space School, are expected to play a crucial role in developing the required expertise.
