Nigeria has made its debut at the World Schools Games Golf Championship, which took place in St Andrews, Scotland, from September 14 to 16. The team consisted of five young golfers from different schools in Lagos State. They competed against young golfers from other countries, showcasing their skills and talent. This historic participation marks a significant milestone for Nigerian golf, as the country takes its first steps in the international golfing arena.
Toluwalashe Balogun of Lagoon Schools, Lekki, made a remarkable impression by finishing as runner-up in the Junior Girls category. Tiaraoluwa Ahmadu of St. Saviour’s School, Ikoyi, also made a strong showing, finishing in the top five. Their impressive performances demonstrate the potential of Nigerian young golfers and bode well for the future of the sport in the country.
In the Junior Boys category, Mayomile Orungbeja of St. Gregory’s College finished in the top 10, further highlighting the talent and depth of Nigerian golf. The team was completed by Fireyimi Aina of Lagos Preparatory School, Ikoyi, and Melvin Strasser of Meadow Hall School, Lekki. The participation of these young golfers is a testament to the growing interest in golf in Nigeria.
The Team Coordinator, Oluseyi Badmos of 2AT Limited, emphasized the importance of the championship as a platform for exposing young golfers to international competition. He highlighted that such opportunities allow children to compete, learn, build confidence, and understand what it takes to perform at a higher level. Badmos also stressed the significance of sustained collaboration among stakeholders to widen access to golf.
The team’s participation is closely tied to Let’s Play Golf in Schools, a grassroots initiative of 2AT Limited that introduces golf to schoolchildren and creates a pathway from the school playground to structured training and competitive golf. This initiative has been instrumental in promoting golf in schools and identifying talented young golfers.
Badmos expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government, through the State Universal Basic Education Board, for giving 2AT Limited the opportunity to introduce golf to primary school pupils across the state. He also thanked the parents, schools, coaches, and supporters of the golfers for their backing of junior golf in Lagos State and Nigeria.
