The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has introduced Lenacapavir Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) as a new HIV prevention technology in Nigeria. This development was announced at a two-day training programme for journalists in Lagos State. Lenacapavir PrEP is a long-acting injectable that provides 100% protection against HIV infection. It is administered bi-annually, making it a convenient option for individuals at high risk of contracting the virus.
According to Dr. Segun Oyedeji, Lead Facilitator and Principal Partner at Kent Consult Limited, Lenacapavir PrEP is a game-changer in HIV prevention. Unlike earlier Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), which is taken after exposure to HIV, Lenacapavir PrEP is taken by non-infected individuals who are at high risk of contracting the virus. The injectable is a Capsid inhibitor that attacks the protein shell of HIV, preventing it from multiplying.
Dr. Oyedeji explained that PrEP is designed for individuals who exhibit high-risk behaviors, such as having multiple sex partners, not using condoms, or engaging in commercial sex work. To be eligible for PrEP, individuals must undergo an eligibility test to determine which prevention option is suitable for them. Lenacapavir PrEP is one of four PrEP options available, including daily oral PrEP, two-month interval injectable Cabotegravir, and the Dapivrine Vaginal Ring.
The Director-General of NACA, Dr. Temitope Ilori, emphasized the importance of media involvement in raising awareness about HIV prevention options. She noted that the media has the power to shape public understanding and encourage individuals to seek prevention services. Dr. Ilori charged journalists to report accurately and responsibly on PrEP and HIV prevention, without stigma.
Mr. Adeleye Taofeek, Senior Prevention Manager at AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), encouraged the use of condoms as part of preventive measures for HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). He emphasized that condoms can prevent other STIs, in addition to HIV, and urged the media to create demand for various HIV prevention options.
Lenacapavir PrEP has been approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Nigeria. The country received its first batch of doses in March 2026 and has distributed them to eight pilot states. Investigation revealed that the demand for Lenacapavir PrEP is high, especially among sex workers who value privacy and convenience.
The introduction of Lenacapavir PrEP in Nigeria is expected to significantly reduce the number of new HIV infections. Research has shown that there have been no infections among individuals who have received the LEN PrEP, demonstrating its effectiveness. The Federal Government, through NACA, is working to ensure that the injectable is accessible to all individuals who need it.
