Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, has emphasized that building a great nation requires more than human wisdom and public policy. He made this statement at an interdenominational church service marking Nigeria's 66th Independence anniversary in Jos.
The governor, represented by his deputy, Ngo Josephine Piyo, noted that Nigeria has come a long way since independence, experiencing moments of triumph and profound difficulty. He acknowledged that the country has faced economic challenges, insecurity, political disagreements, and social tensions, but emphasized that Nigeria has endured. The governor's remarks highlight the nation's resilience and its people's determination to overcome obstacles.
Mutfwang pointed out that Nigeria remains one nation, bound by a shared destiny, and blessed with enormous human and natural resources. He attributed the nation's endurance to the creativity of its young people, the resilience of farmers, the ingenuity of entrepreneurs, and the dedication of professionals. The governor's comments reflect his confidence in the nation's potential for growth and development.
The governor's address was in line with the theme of the anniversary, "Nigeria, 66 Years After." He emphasized that the future of the nation is not solely the responsibility of government and political institutions, but also faith-based organizations. According to him, the Church has a crucial role to play in promoting truth, justice, compassion, and responsible citizenship.
Mutfwang stressed that the Church must produce citizens who understand that leadership is service and that public resources are sacred. He urged Christians to reflect their faith in their integrity and actions, and to promote dignity and respect for all people, regardless of their background. The governor's remarks underscore the importance of faith in shaping the nation's values and institutions.
The governor outlined his administration's vision for Plateau State, which includes building a secure, united, prosperous, and respected state. He highlighted the three-point policy agenda of Peace, Security, and Good Governance; Physical Infrastructural Development; and Sustainable Economic Rebirth. Mutfwang emphasized that achieving these objectives requires collaboration between the government and citizens.
Mutfwang concluded by urging Nigerians to reflect on the lessons learned from their experiences and to choose dialogue, forgiveness, justice, and reconciliation over confrontation, revenge, impunity, and division. He emphasized that collective efforts are necessary to build a great nation, and that the government needs the support of the Church and every citizen who believes in the future of Plateau State.
