The All Progressives Congress (APC) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) national chairmen, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda and Senator David Mark, have congratulated Nigerians on the country's 66th Independence Anniversary. In separate statements, they urged Nigerians to remain united and resilient, with a renewed commitment to national development. Yilwatda described the anniversary as a moment to celebrate Nigerians' resilience, unity, and faith in the country's greatness.
Yilwatda commended Nigerians for their sacrifices, patience, and determination in navigating the country's challenges. He noted that Nigeria has consistently demonstrated the capacity to overcome adversity and move forward. The APC National Chairman acknowledged that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu inherited a difficult economic situation and took difficult decisions to undertake fundamental reforms.
The reforms, according to Yilwatda, include the removal of petrol subsidy, foreign-exchange market reforms, and efforts to strengthen domestic revenue mobilisation. He stated that these measures have involved significant short-term sacrifices but have led to measurable signs of macroeconomic stabilisation. The World Bank has reported stronger economic growth and improved fiscal and external positions.
According to Yilwatda, Nigeria's real GDP grew by 4.2 per cent in the first half of 2026, while gross foreign reserves reached $51.9 billion at the end of July 2026. He pointed to developments in the energy sector, investment, digital economy, and social protection as evidence that the reform programme is moving beyond stabilisation towards structural transformation.
Yilwatda assured Nigerians that the APC would continue to support policies that promote economic growth, national security, social inclusion, and institutional development. He urged citizens to reflect on the country's journey and participate actively in the democratic process ahead of the 2027 general elections. The APC National Chairman encouraged Nigerians to celebrate the country and work together for a better future.
Senator David Mark, in a goodwill message, described independence as a defining milestone and a testament to the resilience and courage of the Nigerian people. He urged Nigerians to remain united and committed to the country's progress. Mark's statement was signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan.
Both Yilwatda and Mark's messages emphasised the need for Nigerians to work together to achieve a brighter future. Their statements highlighted the country's progress and the need for continued efforts to address existing challenges. The chairmen's messages were seen as a call to action for Nigerians to participate in the democratic process and promote national development.
