The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has congratulated the government and people of Nigeria on the country's 66th Independence Anniversary, which was celebrated on October 1. In a statement signed by its Secretary General, Comrade Oladimeji Uthman, NANS said the anniversary should serve as a reminder of the nation's continuing responsibility to build a worthy future. The student body noted that Nigeria's journey since independence has been marked by achievements, challenges, and renewed possibilities.
NANS highlighted that Nigeria's independence was not achieved by one individual, region, or generation, but was shaped by the contributions, negotiations, aspirations, and sacrifices of Nigerians from diverse backgrounds. The association emphasized that the country's ethnic, religious, and cultural diversities should be harnessed as sources of strength and creativity. This, NANS believes, is a profound lesson that Nigeria has always been bigger than its differences.
The student body stressed that the meaning of independence must evolve from political sovereignty to human development, equal opportunity, educational advancement, and youth empowerment. For students, independence must mean freedom to acquire quality education without unnecessary barriers, the opportunity to acquire relevant skills, and the assurance that background does not determine the limits of one's future. NANS emphasized that education remains one of the strongest instruments for transforming a nation's population into productive human capital.
NANS called on all levels of government to prioritize education, human capital development, research, innovation, and employability in national development. The student body urged the government and stakeholders to strengthen the educational system, improve learning environments, support academic and non-academic staff, and expand opportunities for research and innovation. This, NANS believes, will enable students to compete in an increasingly knowledge-driven global economy.
The association also urged Nigerian students to move beyond being beneficiaries of development to becoming active participants in its design and execution. NANS emphasized that the future of Nigeria will not be built by government alone, but in lecture halls and laboratories, through innovation, entrepreneurship, and technology, and through responsible citizenship. The student body encouraged students to reject academic dishonesty, violence, cultism, examination malpractice, and intolerance.
Reaffirming its commitment to the Nigerian project, NANS said it would continue to advocate for accessible quality education, student welfare, and youth inclusion. The student body emphasized that its history is its foundation, its unity is its strength, its youth are its energy, its students are its intellectual capital, and its future is a responsibility that must be collectively built.
NANS concluded by emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility in building a brighter future for Nigeria. The student body remains committed to working towards a nation that values education, youth empowerment, and patriotism. By doing so, NANS believes that Nigeria can overcome its challenges and become a great nation.
