Former Senate President and National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has felicitated Nigerians on the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary. In a goodwill message, Mark described the attainment of independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960, as a defining milestone in the nation’s history. He urged citizens and leaders to renew their commitment to national unity, peace, stability and development.
Mark said the anniversary should provide an opportunity not only to celebrate the country’s achievements but also to reflect on its journey and recommit to building a nation where justice, equity, security and prosperity are accessible to all. According to him, Nigeria possesses enormous human and material resources capable of transforming the country into a prosperous and globally respected nation. However, these resources must be responsibly harnessed for the common good.
The ADC national chairman stressed that independence was not simply the termination of colonial rule, but the beginning of the collective responsibility to build a nation founded on justice, unity, peace and shared prosperity. He emphasized the importance of inclusion and mutual respect, saying Nigeria’s diversity should be a source of strength rather than division. Mark urged Nigerians to promote national unity, mutual respect and inclusion.
Mark called on Nigerians to place national interest above personal and sectional considerations, while advocating for stronger democratic institutions and adherence to the rule of law. He stated that the Nigeria of their dream is possible if they prioritize national interest and strengthen democratic institutions. This, he believes, will create an environment where young people can live, work and realize their potential.
The former Senate President acknowledged the sacrifices of Nigeria’s founding fathers, past leaders, members of the armed forces, security agencies and millions of citizens who have contributed to the survival and development of the country. He urged political leaders to regard public office as a solemn trust and an opportunity to serve rather than a platform for personal enrichment.
Mark expressed optimism that visionary leadership, responsible citizenship, institutional reforms and a renewed spirit of patriotism could help Nigeria overcome its difficulties and realise its potential. He called on Nigerians to remain committed to democratic values, peaceful coexistence and the collective task of nation-building despite the challenges facing the country.
The ADC leader congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the anniversary and prayed for peace, stability, prosperity and greater unity across the country. He renewed his faith in Nigeria and recommit himself to building the Nigeria they desire and deserve. Mark wished Nigerians a happy Independence Anniversary and prayed for God’s continued blessings on the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
