The Niger State Government has released N249 million to the families of 37 deceased illegal miners and 32 survivors. This move is aimed at supporting the affected families and survivors, and cushioning the economic and emotional impacts of the tragedy on them. Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago made the announcement on Monday evening, stating that each family of the deceased miners would receive N5 million, while the survivors would get N2 million each.
According to Governor Bago, the financial assistance is designed to provide the beneficiaries with an opportunity to venture into alternative economic activities rather than return to "unsafe and unprofessional mining practices". He emphasized the importance of exploring safer and more sustainable means of livelihood, urging the survivors and other young people in mining communities to desist from dangerous artisanal mining.
In addition to the financial assistance, Governor Bago disclosed that the state government had directed the Niger State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB) to establish schools in appropriate communities. This initiative aims to encourage children to enrol in schools rather than become exposed to the hazards of artisanal mining. The governor explained that this effort is part of a broader strategy to protect children, expand access to education, and create better opportunities for the younger generation.
Governor Bago expressed appreciation to the families of the deceased and the survivors for their perseverance, patience, and understanding throughout the difficult period. He also commended the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Umar Faruk Bahago, for his efforts in promoting peace within his domain and for the important role he played in counselling and supporting the families affected by the tragedy.
The Emir of Minna, Alhaji Bahago, responded on behalf of the bereaved families and survivors, expressing appreciation to Governor Bago for the financial intervention and describing it as "a compassionate gesture towards the affected families". The emir acknowledged the governor's efforts in supporting the affected families and survivors, and pledged his continued support for the administration.
The financial assistance from the Niger State Government comes hours after the Federal Government donated N250 million to the relations of the 37 deceased illegal miners and some survivors. This demonstrates a concerted effort by both the federal and state governments to mitigate the impact of the tragedy on the affected families and communities.
The Niger State Government's initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the mining communities, promoting safer and more sustainable livelihoods, and expanding access to education. The governor's efforts have been commended by various stakeholders, including the Emir of Minna, who praised the government's compassion and commitment to supporting the affected families.
